"Near me" isn't a slogan — it's the biggest price lever
Two identical containers can differ by hundreds of dollars depending on which depot they ship from. Before you compare prices, it helps to know why location drives almost everything about a container purchase.
Delivery is priced by the mile
Most of your delivery cost is the tilt-bed truck driving from the depot to your gate. A supplier 30 miles away almost always beats one 200 miles away — even at a higher container price.
Stock changes by region
Inventory follows the ports. Coastal and inland-port metros see more one-trip (near-new) boxes, while rural areas often have more used cargo-worthy units. What's available locally shapes your real options.
Pricing is local, not national
There's no single sticker price for a "20ft container." Regional supply, fuel, and demand mean the fair number in Texas isn't the fair number in Maine. Compare quotes in your own market.
Permits & placement vary
Some towns require a permit or setback for an on-ground container; others don't. Climate matters too — coastal salt air and freeze-thaw both affect which condition grade is worth paying for.
Pick a size
10ft, 20ft or 40ft — same width, different length
Every standard container is 8ft wide. Only the length changes, so choosing a size is really about how much floor you need and how much room you have to land it. Here's the quick version — each links to a full size guide.
10ft container
10' L × 8' W × 8'6" H · ~75 sq ft
- Fits small yards, alleys & tight access
- Often cut down from 20ft, so priced per foot it can run higher
- Great for tools, equipment & site storage
20ft container
20' L × 8' W × 8'6" H · ~150 sq ft
- Best all-round size for homes & small business
- Widely stocked, so the easiest to find used & one-trip
- Delivers on a standard tilt-bed without special rigging
40ft container
40' L × 8' W × 8'6" H · ~305 sq ft
- Maximum storage for the lowest cost per square foot
- High-cube option adds a foot of height for bulky loads
- Needs ~60ft of straight clearance to set down
Know what you're buying
The four condition grades, decoded
"New" and "used" barely describe a steel box. Suppliers grade containers by a handful of industry terms, and the grade — not the photo — is what you're paying for. Match the grade to the job and you won't over- or under-buy.
One-Trip NEW
Manufactured overseas, shipped once with cargo, then sold. Near-new: clean paint, solid floors, tight doors, minimal wear.
Best for: homes, offices, conversions, anything visible.
Cargo-Worthy CW
Certified structurally sound and still fit for ocean transport. Surface rust and cosmetic dings are normal; no holes, doors work.
Best for: long-term storage where looks don't matter.
Wind & Water Tight WWT
Keeps weather out but isn't certified for shipping. May have more rust and patched spots. A budget pick for dry storage.
Best for: on-site storage on a tighter budget.
As-Is AS-IS
Sold exactly as it stands — may leak, have soft floor sections, or door issues. Cheapest, but inspect in person first.
Best for: scrap, parts, or projects where leaks are fine.
What it costs
Ballpark price ranges by size and condition
Use these as a sanity check, not a quote. They're typical 2026 U.S. ranges for the container alone — delivery is separate and depends entirely on how far the depot is from you. A real quote from a local supplier is the only accurate number.
| Size | Used (WWT / CW) | One-Trip (near-new) | Best value for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10ft | $1,800 – $3,000 | $3,000 – $4,500 | Tight spaces, small storage |
| 20ft standard | $1,600 – $3,200 | $3,000 – $5,000 | The all-round default |
| 40ft standard | $2,000 – $3,800 | $4,000 – $6,500 | Most space per dollar |
| 40ft high cube | $2,200 – $4,200 | $4,500 – $7,000 | Tall or bulky loads, conversions |
Before you pay
The 9-point pre-purchase inspection
Whether you inspect in person or ask the supplier for photos and a video walk-around, these are the things that actually decide whether a container is a deal or a headache. Run the list before money changes hands.
- 1Seams & corners for rustSurface rust is fine; flaking, bubbling, or rust at weld seams and corner castings is a structural warning.
- 2Floor conditionWalk it. Hardwood should be solid and dry — soft spots, rot, or heavy chemical staining are deal-breakers for many uses.
- 3Doors open, close & sealBoth doors should swing freely and latch. Check that the rubber gaskets are intact all the way around.
- 4Daylight testStand inside with the doors shut. Any pinholes of light mean leaks — fine for As-Is, not for storage.
- 5Roof for ponding & dentsLook for standing-water stains or deep dents that trap water; these become the first rust-through points.
- 6Smell insideA strong chemical or fuel smell can mean the prior cargo soaked in. Hard to remove and a health concern for habitable conversions.
- 7CSC plate & container numberA legible CSC/data plate confirms it's a real ISO unit and matters if you ever ship or export it.
- 8Prior repairs & patchesPatched holes aren't automatically bad, but ask what was repaired and why, and check the work is solid.
- 9Get the grade in writingHave the quote state the condition grade (One-Trip, CW, WWT, As-Is) so the box that arrives matches what you bought.
The part most guides skip
Can a truck actually deliver to your spot?
Most containers arrive on a tilt-bed (roll-off) truck that slides the box off the back onto the ground. That needs more room than people expect — sorting this out before you buy avoids a failed, and sometimes still-billed, delivery.
- Straight run: a 40ft delivery typically needs ~60ft of clear, straight space; a 20ft needs ~40ft. The truck can't drop a box on a tight curve.
- Firm & level ground: gravel or compacted dirt is ideal. Soft mud, sand, or a steep slope can strand the truck or twist the container.
- Overhead clearance: the bed tilts up high during unloading. Watch for power lines, low branches, roof eaves, and carports.
- Tight site? Ask about options: some suppliers offer crane or forklift placement for an extra fee when a roll-off can't reach the spot.
- Tell the supplier upfront: describe your access and surface when you request a quote so the delivery fee is right the first time.
Buy safely
Container scams are common — here's what to watch for
The container market attracts fake listings, especially on online classifieds and social-media listings. Legitimate suppliers won't mind any of the checks below. If a deal trips several of these wires, walk away.
When you get quotes
Eight questions that separate good suppliers from the rest
Ask every supplier the same things and compare the answers, not just the prices. Clear, confident answers are a good sign; vague or evasive ones tell you plenty too.
- What exact condition grade is this, and will it be stated on the invoice?
- Is the price for the container only, or does it include delivery to my address?
- What truck do you deliver on, and how much clear space do I need?
- Can I see photos or a video of the actual unit I'm buying?
- How old is the container and what was it last used to ship?
- What's your return or recourse policy if it arrives worse than described?
- When do you collect payment — and do you take traceable methods?
- Do you offer modifications (doors, vents, windows, lock boxes)?
